Caught the remake of Godzilla last week and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was apprehensive at first, having read a review from the Sydney Morning Herald (below). But then I googled “Godzilla reviews” and was pleased to see good ratings out of IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
Here’s the broad spectrum of backers and haters:
So why are people so divided? I can only put it down to expectations:
- some wanted to see a longer part for the lead actor (because of all the marketing)
- others still were distracted when the movie traversed between monsters and family-romance
- others came in, popcorn in hand, sat back and enjoyed the film.
Yes, I came in with my popcorn.
There are times when think things through. But this was a Godzilla movie and all I wanted was to be entertained by action, a thin plot and great visuals. My approach to BIG blockbuster movies is ‘don’t overthink it’ – it’s just a movie. Sit back and relax, it’s time to be a kid again.
So do catch it if you’re a fan of the old monster-mash genre and if you approach movies of this kind the same way I do. But if you questions things a lot then you will find holes and leave feeling disappointed.
